Chitungwiza was established in the late 1970s as a direct response to the growing urban population in Zimbabwe. The town was initially conceived as a residential suburb to alleviate housing shortages in nearby Harare. It was named after a local village, Chitungwiza, which means “residence of the chief” in the ChiShona language, reflecting its historical roots in the indigenous culture of Zimbabwe.

Chitungwiza has also made history in sports, as it recently hosted its first rugby match, marking a significant milestone for the town. Additionally, Chitungwiza has been a place of significance for various organizations, including UFIC, AFM, Methodist, Anglican,ZAOGA and others.  The town has active Youth Associations which support devolution i.e Youth Empowerment Hub, YADT, GWEN Trust, Shamwari Yemwanasikana. Furthermore, Chitungwiza has been a center for industrial activities, as evidenced by the production of bread using rotary ovens in the town center since 1991.
